Using Multimedia in EFL classrooms Grades 4-6

Chapter 1

Introduction

Being an English teacher, I do love my profession very much. I have learned what to teach and also how to get along with different kids. Before every class, I have to prepare some handouts for the instructions. I always search for websites or go to bookstores to find out new ideas and games. I try to make my classes interesting and varied. However, it is not easy to achieve all my expectations. What I hope to develop for my English classes is a series of innovative English teaching methods.

Consequently, I prepared some songs, instructional videos, some animated games and cartoons for students to appreciate and enjoy. I felt the class was different from the traditional English cram school when I played some songs or videos for class warm-up or wrap-up. It made me and my students feel relaxed and happy. After class, I would hear some students sing out aloud. That really made me satisfied and glad on my way home. Besides this, playing English instructional videos, such as the famous English teaching TV program in Taiwan , “Magic ABC,” also taught students different English contextual usage. The reasons that I wanted to use videos was that students not only learned from broad topics but also from lively and vivid studio films. These films made students keep watching quietly for about 30 minutes. Furthermore, when I taught my tutoring students, I showed them animated English cartoons from one Shanghai elementary school website. They couldn’t stop watching, and wanted to know what would happen next even when the dismissal time had passed. These interesting facts above are the main reasons that I chose “Multimedia English teaching” as the topic of my thesis.

My name is Chao-Ching Chen from Taipei County. I was graduated from Aletheia University, majoring in foreign language and literature. After completing my bachelor degree, I went to America to pursue my master degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language). I received this degree in May, 2008. I gained a lot of knowledge both in my field and in how to live and get along with different races. Therefore, I can employ what I have learned in my job.

As for my working experiences, I have learned a lot from my past working experiences such as waitress, secretary, foreign sales, and English teacher. My special areas of expertise are English and import and export trade. I have worked as an elementary and intermediate English teacher at Giraffe English Cram School in Taipei County from 1999-2001 and also gained the certificate of English teacher at Giraffe English Schools. After that, I taught English in three private cram schools. I garnered many teaching ideas by means of teaching different levels and ages of students. My teaching specialty is phonics and KK phonetic symbols. I also like to combine isolated skills into integrated instruction so that the four basic English skills become more integrated and complete.

In the past, students began to learn English in the first year of junior high school. Starting in 2001, English teaching programs were initiated from the fifth grade of elementary school. Additionally, the MOE (Ministry of Education) planned to start English instruction from 3rd grade in 2005. Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, instituted the teaching of English courses beginning in the first grade of elementary school. Students take the English class twice a week and each time is for 45 minutes. What’s more, some students also take the private English classes after school.

English teacher positions in the elementary school now are very competitive in Taiwan. The exam for becoming official teachers is not easy to pass or after passing the test the chance to work in elementary school is very limited. Take my friend, Jenny for example, she passed the test to take English teachers required courses at college, however, after she finished the whole classes. She can’t find any school to teach. She has no option but to work in cram school. Therefore, many official teachers can't find the vacancy to teach at the public or private elementary school.

I remembered I started to learn English since I were in the 7th grade. At that time, English teaching focused more on Grammar Translation approach. Nowadays, as the Communicative Language Teaching has come out. More and more textbooks are complied based on this approach. Furthermore, the textbooks are not standardized from elementary to junior high school. The educational policy of this is to make the learning more diverse but this makes students more stressed since they have to prepare as many different versions of textbooks to pass the entrance exam.

This is sociolinguistics class-my reply to the Discussion board.

In order to learn the native culture of gratitude in the shortest time, I will have three stages to follow the instruction of gratitude. The time of each stage is flexible to tailor to end in 30 minutes. For the first stage, I will compare the C1 and C2 respectively. Then, I will focus on the native culture and illustrate the different functions of gratitude.

An understanding of how culture shapes the language is primary significance for these 6 businessmen. In order to make sure their understanding of the disparate functions of gratitude, initial 10 questions of multiple choices will be practiced and discussed together. For the second stage of lectures, video for realizing the authentic use of gratitude will be played. Then, I will have 6 businessmen separate into 3 groups for role playing and simulation such as expressing in response to receiving a gift, favor, reward, or service. Have them use thanking formulas to express their gratitude as much as possible.
