The reason that I choose this one is because teaching for norms of small C is not easy. Normally, it takes time to understand the target culture wholly. Take Dr. Harada’s example as an example, she mentioned that there was a Japanese man who would like to buy mahjong. But the clerk of the store didn’t sell to him. The Japanese man thought that the clerk may have racial discrimination. Consequently, the clerk called Dr. Harada and explained the reason to her. Finally, the Japanese man realized what was going on with this event. From the stories, we can tell how it is important to teach the local culture with a small “C”. English teaching not only just focus on linguistics details but also need to teach English as a whole, especially the target culture as authentic as possible.

Furthermore, different social groups may have different norms of interaction and interpretation. Therefore, when we teach the target culture, we need to be careful about the norms of interpretation. How will students present this conversing with strangers or how will students deal with church services in America? These need to put more emphasis when teaching English. In other words, English teacher not just teach the language itself but also need to widen the related language items such as big C and small C.

For the EFL environment, students don’t have the authentic setting to learn English after class. Therefore, English teachers need to present the target language and culture as real as possible. Multimedia English teaching is the good channel to present the norms. Video is a window on English-language culture. Besides the usual textbook-based activities, teachers can teach the target language and culture more interesting and interactive since different norms need to present more multi-sensory. As a consequence, students will know how to function the target culture properly and suitably.
